Are Artificial Flowers Tacky? I Answer the Questions Everyone's Actually Googling

Let's be honest - at some point, most of us have walked past a arrangement of faux flowers and thought "hmm... are those real?" And if you couldn't tell, that's kind of the whole point.

But artificial flowers still get a bad reputation. Maybe it's the memory of those dusty plastic roses on grandma's windowsill in the 90s. Or the sad, sun-bleached bunch by the front door of a pub that nobody's touched since 2007.

The good news? Those days are long gone. And we get a lot of questions from people who are curious about making the switch but have a few reservations. So we decided to answer the big ones - honestly, without the sales pitch.

"Are artificial flowers tacky?"

This is the question we get asked more than any other - usually in hushed tones, like it's a controversial opinion.

Here's the truth: it depends entirely on the quality.

A cheap, shiny plastic flower stuffed in a vase will look cheap. Just like cheap real flowers - the kind that wilt by Tuesday then look sad. The quality of the product matters enormously.

Modern high-end artificial flowers are made from silk, latex, or foam, and are designed to replicate the exact texture, colour variation, and weight of real blooms. Some are so convincing that even florists do a double-take. When you invest in well-made faux florals and style them thoughtfully, nobody's calling them tacky - they're calling them beautiful.

"Do they look fake?"

Again - it depends. Five years ago, the honest answer would have been "sometimes, yes." Today? Not if you choose carefully.

The best artificial flowers now have:

  • Realistic colour gradients - petals that darken or lighten at the edges, just like real ones

  • Varied textures - soft, velvety, or even slightly waxy depending on the flower type

  • Natural-looking stems - not bright green plastic tubes, but realistic bendable stems with visible detail

  • Imperfect shapes - because perfection actually looks fake; real flowers have a little irregularity to them

Our advice? Hold them up to the light. If the petals diffuse light the way a real petal would, you're onto a winner.

"Are they worth it compared to real flowers?"

This one comes down to how you think about value.

Real flowers are beautiful. They smell incredible. And they last, on average, about 7–10 days before they start drooping. For a bouquet that costs £30–£50, that works out to a fairly short-lived luxury.

Artificial flowers, on the other hand, last for years. The initial cost is higher in some cases, but you're buying something that will look just as good in three years as it does on day one - no wilting, no dead petals on the table, no emergency trips to the supermarket before guests arrive.

For arrangements you want to keep permanently - a wreath on the door, a centrepiece on the dining table, flowers in a bedroom - artificial is genuinely the more practical and often more cost-effective choice over time.

"Do they collect dust?"

Yes. So does everything else in your home. A quick dust with a soft brush or a gentle blast from a hairdryer on a cool setting keeps them looking fresh. Some people give theirs a very light mist of water and leave them to air - it helps knock off any dust and gives the petals a just-picked look.

It's not a big job. Certainly a lot less effort than changing real flowers every week.

"Can I use artificial flowers outdoors?"

Mostly, yes if they are pre treated with Fabsil - but not all. If you're placing flowers somewhere that gets direct sunlight or heavy rain, you'll want to look specifically for UV-resistant, weather-treated varieties. Standard artificial flowers can fade or degrade if they're left out in the elements without any protection.

For sheltered outdoor spots - a covered porch, a pergola, a shaded balcony - a good quality faux arrangement will hold up beautifully. Our wreaths & hanging baskets for example, are popular choices for front doors, and many customers keep them up for months at a time without any issues.

"What's the best way to style artificial flowers so they don't look fake?"

A few tips that make a real difference:

Mix them up. Pair artificial blooms with real greenery, dried botanicals, or natural elements like wood and stone. The contrast actually makes everything look more organic.

Don't overfill. Real flower arrangements have breathing room. Pack a vase too tightly with artificial stems and it starts to look like a display in a shop window rather than something you arranged at home.

Choose the right vase. Opaque vases are your friend - they hide the stems, which are often the biggest giveaway. A ceramic or terracotta pot works brilliantly for this.

Think about scale. Oversized blooms in a small room, or tiny flowers on a large table, can look off. Match the scale of your arrangement to the space it's sitting in.

Let them live somewhere they'd naturally grow. A fern in a dark bathroom, some blousy peonies in a bright living room - the more naturally placed they feel, the more convincing they look.

"Are artificial flowers sustainable?"

This is a question more people are asking, and it's a fair one.

The honest answer is: it's complicated. Real cut flowers have a significant environmental footprint - many are flown in from abroad, they use large amounts of water in production, and they involve pesticides. Artificial flowers, meanwhile, are usually made from synthetic materials that don't biodegrade.

However, when you buy a high-quality artificial arrangement that lasts for years rather than days, the overall impact is considerably lower than buying fresh flowers repeatedly. It's not a perfect answer, but it's a reasonable one - especially if you're buying quality rather than fast-fashion faux flowers that end up in the bin after a season.

One last thing

Sarah started Looksmartuk because we genuinely believe that your home should look beautiful without it being a constant source of effort or expense. Artificial flowers - done right are part of that. They're not a compromise. They're just a smarter choice for a lot of people's lives.
